Gitxsan Care for Gitxsan Children
We are Gitxsan people serving our Gitxsan Nation. Our Lax Yip (traditional territory) encompasses 33,000 km² of land and water in northwestern British Columbia, with 6 Gitxsan communities located along the Skeena River. We serve 5 of them Anspayaxw, Sik-e-dakh, Gitsegukla, Gitwangak, and Gitanyow. We are organized into four matrilineal clans—Frog, Wolf, Fireweed , and Eagle—which are further divided into autonomous social units called Wilps (Houses), each with a hereditary High Chief. Us Gitxsan have maintained a rich culture and governance system based on kinship and oral traditions know as adaawk.
Gitxsan Child & Family Service Society was established in 2000 and we offer a full spectrum of services. Our founding principled is: Children are precious and must be protected; they are the future of the Gitxsan Nation. The Gitxsan ‘Ayookw’ carry timeless values and wisdom; these will guide service delivery and program development. The Gitxsan family provides a natural way to protect children.
